3 Techniques for Properly Burping a Newborn Baby

Feeding a newborn baby can be an exciting, challenging, yet intimidating experience for any parent, whether it’s your first or third baby. Feeding your baby is a special and intimate time, but that time together can get complicated if the baby is full of gas or unable to eat.

Sometimes, a simple burp will ease the gas and comfort the baby. Burp a newborn by recognizing the signs that a burp is needed, and by using a position that works for you and the baby.

Burping in babies is caused by trapped air in the stomach. As babies feed they gulp air as well. The air takes space in the stomach so there is less room for the milk. The trapped air has to be released - so burped out - to make space for the milk.
