Why is My Baby Crying?

One of the biggest worries for all parents is a crying baby. Because crying is their only means of communication it can often be quite difficult to interpret the reason for their distress and the only real way of finding out is to use a process of elimination.

- The main reasons that babies cry are hunger, tiredness, a dirty nappy, that they are too hot, cold or uncomfortable or just in need of a good cuddle.

- Hunger, thirst, tiredness, a dirty nappy, too hot, too cold, physically uncomfortable, over-stimulated or just in need of a good cuddle.

- Double check each of these, offer a feed, check if your baby has done a poo etc.

- Look for hunger cues such as rooting for the breast and offer a feed

- You can often use the time of day to judge why your baby is crying, if it’s late evening they may be tired.  

- As you get to know your baby and become familiar with their more settled routine it will become easier and easier to know why your baby is crying.
