8 Things to Ask About at Your Six Week Postpartum Checkup

Now that you're getting used to life with a newborn, it's time to give your post-pregnancy body some attention. From questions about your emotions to details about the pelvic exam, get the rundown on what to expect at your postpartum checkup.

Breastfeeding:

• Nursing? Tell your doc about any worries or pain you may have.

• Sore nipples, redness, lumps, or bumps could be signs of a cloggged duct or mastitis.

Contraception:

• Not hoping for another baby just yet? Talk to your doc about birth control options. (Yes, you can get pregnant while breastfeeding!)

Exercise:

• Your OB/GYN will do a breast and pelvic exam and check any stitches you may have. If you're healing well, she should give you the green light for exercise.

Your Mood:

• Talk about your stress levels and amotions post-delivery. If you're feeling sad or notice other mood changes, tell your doc!

Bleeding:

• It's normal to still have a bit of bleeding down there. But if it's heavy, mention it.

Hemorrhoids:

• They're common after giving birth. Let your doc know if you have discomfort when sitting or during bowel movements, or if you have itching or bleeding.

Postpartum Thyroiditis:

• Signs of this less-common disorder include heart palpitations, feelings of nervousness or shakiness, or excessive sweating.

Complications:

• If you had any complications during your pregnancy or labor, your doc can tell you how they may affect future pregnancies.
