Allergens: Setting the Record Straight

The rates of allergy have significantly increased in Australia over the last decade. So it's a real concern what we need to be doing is making sure that we do include allergens in our diet on a regular basis to help build up our baby's immune system and their immune defense to allergens.

So I always recommend to my pregnant mums to be incorporating allergens on a regular basis throughout pregnancy, throughout breastfeeding. And then when your little ones start feeding solids make sure that you're giving them allergens on a regular basis as well.

Common allergens include things like peanuts, other tree nuts, milk, wheat, soy, seafood and fish. When it does come to nuts though obviously we don't want to be giving little ones nuts because of their choking risks, so instead that's where we want to use some nut peces.

I always advise parents to introduce allergens on a regular basis in small amounts and that's really what the latest research is showing. So to me that means two or three times a week for example you might put some peanut paste on to a slice of bread and they can have a nibble on that for breakfast for example, and just yeah incorporating them on a regular basis to build up their defense.
