Nursing positions need to be comfortable because breastfeeding sessions can last between 30 and 40 minutes. Your comfort and your baby's are key. These basic breastfeeding positions are good starting points for finding the ones that work for you.
No matter the position, make sure your baby's head is tilted back with her chin pressed into your breast and her nose free. This ensures that she can breath freely.
- The cross cradle is easiest for new moms. It has the baby laying across your body on a pillow.
- The cradle position nuzzles her in close, using a blanket for support, if necessary.
- The football position places her under your arm, again using a pillow for support, if necessary.
- The straddle has her pressed against your body, one leg over each side of yours.
- This is a good position if the baby has reflux, although it can be difficult for moms new to nursing.
If you still don't feel comfortable nursing with these breastfeeding tips, contact a board-certified lactation consultant for assistance.
