Baby massage, as traditionally done in some cultures, has a deep evolutionary purpose. It not only promotes brain development in the baby but also releases bonding hormones in the mother and triggers her mothering instincts. It makes the baby feel more secure and the mother more attentive. This is another reason why breastfeeding is so important.
Unfortunately, in our societies we are seeing a fairly low rate of breastfeeding and an increase in the Caesarean sections. These signal a genuine discomfort of women with their own bodies which is one of the legacies of modern civilization. So people are becoming more and more afraid of physical experiences such as birth and breastfeeding.
