Choosing a Place of Birth: What You Need to Know

There are three different choices you have for giving birth. You can give birth either in your own home. You could give birth in a midwifery led unit. Or you can give birth in a unit at the hospital usually led by doctors.

If you’re of low risk, so you haven’t got any complications of delivery, then you can choose to deliver at home or in the birth centre. However if there are complications such as diabetes or if you’ve previously had a caesarean, it would be preferable for you to give birth in hospital.

Your three options might depend on what kind of pain relief you want. For instance you can’t obviously have an epidural at home you can only have an epidural in a hospital in an obstetric unit. If you want for instance a water birth, or gas and air, or pethidine you can certainly choose to have your baby in the hospital birth centre or in your own home.
