Pregnancy is one of the main causes of back pain in women. It occurs when the growing uterus shifts the center of gravity, putting more strain on the back. Back pain during pregnancy is very common. It occurs in 50% to 80% of women in different stages of pregnancy.
The spine is made up of 33 individual bones called vertebrae. The spinal nerves branch off your spinal cord in pairs and travel through small openings between your vertebrae called intervertebral foramina. The vertebra are numbered and divided into four regions.
Back pain during pregnancy occurs due to strain on the back from the growing uterus and weight gain. Spine deformity in the lumbar region causes constriction of intervertebral foramen and impaction of nerve roots.
There are two types of back pain during pregnancy. The first type is called lumbar pain and is located in the center of the low back. The second type is called posterior pelvic pain. It is located lower than lumbar pain.
