A caesarian section (C-section) in the second stage of labour occurs in 2-3% of all births and carries a much higher risk of traumatic delivery with resulting complications for the mother and baby.
The fetal pillow is a disposable balloon device that is designed to atraumatically dis-impact the deeply engaged fetal head during second stage C-section. The pillow is deployed prophylactically before the uterine incision in order to achieve full elevation of the fetal head, prior to attempts at abdominal deliver, reducing the risk of traumatic delivery.
The device is a silicone balloon that inflates only in one direction, it is inserted below the baby’s head and inflated using saline fluid with a syringe. This forms a bubble of fluid under the baby’s head and elevates it, making the delivery by the surgeon less traumatic to the mother and baby.
