Morning sickness affects around half of pregnant women and can leave you feeling tired and irritable. It can start in early pregnancy, around week 6 and stops around 12-14 week. Causes are thought to be the result of hormonal changes, hypoglycemia, inreased metabolism. It can be experienced anytime of day.
Possible triggers include:
- Scented products
- Bright screens
- Food smells or the thought of certain foods
Make a note of when you feel nauseous to help you identify the trigger
Managing morning sickness:
- Try eating plain crackers 20 minutes before getting up and get out of bed slowly.
- Protein and carbohydrate rich foods may help settle the stomach
- A well cooked egg on toast is a good option
- Avoid caffeine, fatty and spicy foods
Try getting some air or using accupressure bands and carry items to freshen up. Consult your midwife or GP if you're vomiting more than 4 times per day losing weight not keeping fluids down. Try to stay positive and reach out for support if needed.
