How to Soothe Your Teething Baby?

When your baby’s teething, you may notice that their gum is red and sore or one of their cheeks is flushed. You may notice that your baby dribbles more, chews more or is fretful. There’s lots you can try and do, every baby’s different, and what may work for one baby, may not work for them all.

Teething rings give your baby something to chew on, some may be cooled in the fridge, and this may help to soothe your baby’s gums. Please do follow the instructions that come with a teething ring, and never put a teething ring in the freezer as this can damage your baby’s gums. If you do not have a teething ring, some babies do chew on a favourite toy.

For babies over four months old you may rub sugar free teething gel on their gums.  Use a teething gel that’s designed for your baby’s size and age and do ask a pharmacy for advice.

If your baby is weaning you can give them healthy things to chew on, such as raw fruit or vegetables, you can also try giving your baby a crust of bread or breadstick, but do remain with your baby at all times, because babies can choke.

Avoid items that contain lots of sugar as this can cause tooth decay. If your baby has a slightly raised temperature or is in pain, you may want to give them painkilling medicine which is designed for their age and size.

Always follow the guidance that comes with the medicine. If you’re not sure please ask your G.P, pharmacist or health visitor. Comforting and playing with your baby may help to distract them from the pain in their gums.
