Recommended Weight Gain During Pregnancy

If you're planning to have a family I think a key message for parents to be is to look at your own health to begin with. Look at your body weight that's really important. There's a lot of evidence saying that if you have a healthy body weight before becoming pregnant that can have some real benefits to your pregnancy, birth, and the health of the infant and you and your child in later life.

A pregnant woman needs to know a few key messages. And that probably one of the most important is to debunk the myth of eating for two, that's gone. That's not something that women should be doing. Women only need to have a marginal increase in energy intake in their food and I need to be making sure that their micronutrients are vitamins minerals etc are appropriate. And they can seek advice from dieticians or healthcare professionals or their GP to get that information.

And then one key thing that mothers can do is keep an eye on your weight gain during pregnancy. There are guidelines now that suggest how much weight you should be gaining. And again healthcare professionals can provide that information. But we don't want mothers gaining too much or too little weight because there are profound outcomes for the infant and the child. If the weight gain is too great or too little. So keep an eye on your body weight that's an important thing you.
