Safe Sleep for Babies: Tips for Preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death) is the leading cause of death in infants aged 1 month to 1 year. Most SUIDs happen when babies are between 2 months and 4 months of age. Data indicates a high number of these deaths are actually caused by suffocation.

Placing your healthy baby on his or her back to sleep is the number one way to reduce the risk of SUID. Babies who sleep on or under soft bedding are more likely to die of SUID.

Health care providers used to think that babies should sleep on their stomachs, but research now shows that babies are less likely to die of SUID when they sleep on their backs.

ABC Rules for Sleeping Babies:

A - Babies need to sleep alone

B - Babies need to sleep on their back

C - Babies need to sleep in their own crib
