Sex After Childbirth: Tips for an Active Sex Life

Sex may be the last thing on your mind when you're caretaking for your little one 24/7, but when you're ready to get back to sex, let's talk about some tips to make it better.

First, learn how to get out of mommy mode. This is the time where you need to remember what it's like just to be a woman before you became a mommy. Find yourself a babysitter, set aside some time and a room where you can take out all the baby paraphernalia and really get to feeling sexy again.

Next, make sure you get some rest. It's true they say whenever your baby's sleeping, you should be sleeping, too. And take advantage if you have a sitter to take a nap if you need to. If you're too exhausted, you're not gonna be able to have that energy for sex.

Try getting a massage. You know, your infant is constantly demanding of you physically, all day long, but there's a difference between the touch of caretaking and an erotic touch. So if you get a massage, it helps you relax. Helps you secrete hormones that help you calm down, and even think of something like foot reflexology. There's some pressure points that can really help with sexual arousal.

Next, get back in shape. Now, I'm not talking about the baby weight, I'm actually talking about your pelvic floor. The vaginal muscles and the muscles of the pelvic floor all stretch when you give birth. But those are the same ones that are important when you have an orgasm. And so strengthening your pelvic floor is gonna help bring back your sexual pleasure.

Now your doctor may recommend that you do pelvic floor exercises also known as kegel exercises. And there are lots of pelvic floor exercisers out there. Next make sex more comfortable. Go ahead and choose a lubricant. That's what they're there for. I recommend a nice silicone lubricant. Coats the inside of the vagina and helps decrease irritation. And finally, don't freak out. Remember, this is a temporary stage that you're going through. Once you get your pelvic tone back and your routine back, then you get your sex life back too.
