Top 10 Tips for Pregnant Women Exhausted From Heat

Hot weather increases various complaints in pregnant women, such as hot flushes, flushing in palms and soles of feet, allergic problems, nausea, fatigue, insomnia and shortness of breath. Do not let hot weather upset you. Advices from specialist physicians for pregnant woman willing to have a healthy pregnancy.


1 - Prefer doing the outside work in the morning and evening hours when sunlight is less effective.

2 - If the heat is above 32 degrees, stay in rooms cooled by air conditioners or fans.

3 - Prefer light colored cotton, linen and silk clothes.

4 - Drink plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration. Consuming inadequate amounts of fluid increases urinary tract infection, constipation and hemorrhoids complaints. Untreated urinary tract infection may cause many problems such as premature birth and threatened abortion. 

A pregnant woman should consume 2 liters of water under normal circumstances. In summer, this amount should be 250-300 cc of water per hour. Drink mineral water with low sodium to reduce electrolyte and mineral loss. Do not consume too much tea or coffee.

5 - Take salt intake to minimum with the increased hot weather but do not stop using salt. Because both you and your baby need salt. Bath with cold water and rest by lifting your legs up.

6 - Protect yourself from sunlight and sun. Sensitivity, dryness and spotting in skin are common due to the increased hormones in pregnancy. Use 30 factor sunscreens before sun exposure. These will prevent spotting and help to protect you from harmful sun beams. We suggest that you should have a sun bathe in the shade and preferably with a t-shirt on. After shower, use moisturizing creams for your skin.

7 - Frequently take warm showers to prevent hot flushes. Water sprays would help you to cool yourself down. Fruity drinks with milk and yogurt helps to cool you down.

8 - Stay away from foods increasing reflux such as sour foods and foods with barbeque sauce in dinners or before going out in sun light. Also, prefer light and easy to digest foods than high calorie and heavy foods and go to bed at least an hour after the dinner. This will help you to have a pleasant sleep.

9 - Take naps frequently. Please get help if you feel yourself tired and weak.

10 - To limit gaining weight, do exercise. You could prefer exercises like swimming, walking and biking. Create time to swim. Swimming activates all your muscles and also provide mental relaxation.  You could swim in the sea or pools which you are sure of their hygiene.
