A Visual Guide: How to Prepare Your Baby's Bottle Feed?

Breastfeeding is the best start for you and your baby. It's recommended to exclusively breastfeed until 6 months. Look for signs that baby needs a feed. Like becoming more active and putting hands in mouth.

 

Making up a bottle can seem tricky to begin with, but you’ll soon find it becomes second nature. Watch as mum Nina demonstrates how to make up a bottle correctly and discusses the practicalities with our midwife Wendy.

 

Preparing a bottlefeed:

- Wash hands

- Pre-sterilise all utensils

- Boil 1ltr of fresh water

- Leave kettle to cool for no longer than 30 minutes

- Measure the water into a sterilised beaker

- Be careful of scalding

- Don't use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water

- Using the scoop provided, level off the powder

- Add the correct measure of powder to the water

- Adding too few or too many scoops can be harmful

- Cap the bottle and shakewell for 10 seconds until dissolved

- Cool under running tap

- Check temperature of feed

- Feed immediately
