There are many options for dealing with the pain of contractions during labor. There's everything from hypno birthing to, aromatherapy, to reflexology, to acupuncture. These are the sort of natural methods and of course moving about water.
Women love water. Water’s great for labor pains and for birth impact and keeping upright mobile using stools, using balls, using beanbags. So all those things will encourage you to do. And because they all help with the pain of Labor.
But we do have drugs too. We have Entonox also known as gas on air which you breathe during your contractions. This doesn't go through the placenta, so it doesn't affect your baby at all. It kind of people have equated it to sort of feeling like they've had a few drinks. Now for those of you who don't drink that won't be very helpful but for those of you that do it sort of makes you feel light-headed, dizzy. Some people really laugh, some people really cry, some people fall asleep, some people get quite cross. But it really does help take the edge off the pain.
Then we also have an injection called precedent which lasts for about four to six hours. And that's an opiate so that does pass the percent-plus through the placenta to the baby. So often it makes babies a little bit sleepy after the birth and they sometimes have problems with breastfeeding so we try and encourage you you know not to have that.
But it's very good if you're struggling in the early stages of labor is it's a nice smooth muscle relaxant and tends to meet you go quicker. And then of course if you're not coping with the pain and no one gives you the medal at the end of labor so never feel bad about that.
Just use what you need and we have obviously here we have a nice tips that here 24/7 that can give you an epidural and this is a block from your waist down so that you really don't feel the pain too much at all more like pressure, really. So it really depends how you go. I always say to people you if you've never had a baby before, you don't know how you're going to be. So just come in see how you go and let the midwives advise you.
