A new report from the centers for disease control and prevention found that 50% of American women are either overweight or obese when they conceive and that can cause some serious problems with their pregnancy.
What kinds of problems can happen if you're overweight before you get pregnant?
Being overweight before pregnancy poses some risks, things like infertility and not always infertility but when a woman is pregnant, it poses her more risk for hypertension, diabetes. high risk for c-section. in a small number of patients, higher risk for heart disease.
All these things can impact of pregnancy. and so, how do you go about having that conversation with your patients, when they talk about getting ready to start a family?
Pre conception we talk about their obesity. we talk about modest amount of weight loss, die and exercise and starting the process before pregnancy and continuing throughout early pregnancy.
Are you still able to safely lose weight in those early months?
Most women are, but only if they are doing it and a healthy way. if they are eating better, less fast food, less amount and exercising. if they lose weight, it is actually ok.
