What Prenatal Tests or Investigations Are Available?

We have a variety of screening and diagnostic tests that are available to all of our patients and not just patients affected with a high-risk pregnancy. So if a woman is interested in ensuring that her pregnancy is not affected by genetic syndromes such as Down syndrome or Edwards syndrome, we can offer non-invasive prenatal screening by looking at the free fetal DNA in the first trimester and if this test were to come back abnormal or if there was any other abnormality picked up on ultrasound, we can offer a prenatal diagnostic test in the form of either a chorionic villus sampling and CVS which we perform between eleven and thirteen weeks or an amniocentesis which we can perform anytime after the 16th week. And we also offer a detailed fetal nationally ultrasound ideally performed between 20 and 22 weeks gestation.

At the start of pregnancy, your uterus is the size of a small Conference pear. By the end of the nine months it's more like an oversized watermelon, holding a baby and at least a pint of water, so it's not surprising you feel twinges as it grows, especially as it will be touching the bottom of your ribs. At 16-20 weeks you may feel slight pain caused by some ligaments beginning to stretch.
