Where Your Breast Milk Starts

Your breasts are a unique human organ. They only start to mature once you're pregnant when they begin to remodel themselves. From 4 weeks a complex web of milk ducts and milk-producing cells called lactocytes start forming. So as well as creating a new person you're preparing a new food supply too!

During pregnancy your breasts might grow by up to 46% but how much milk you make depends on how much milk-producing tissue you have not your bra size. Your lactocytes start working from around 15 weeks. But the milk production cycle only begins once your baby is born.
