5 Surprising Things That Can Affect Your Breast Milk Supply

First of all, is your milk supply really low? Often, mothers think that their milk supply is low when it really isn’t. If your baby is gaining weight well on breastmilk alone, then you do not have a problem with milk supply.

However, for some mothers the results of baby’s weight checks aren’t as encouraging and the amount of milk they are producing isn’t always enough to meet baby’s needs.

By understanding what lowers the supply of breast milk and making a few changes to your daily routine, you may be able to turn it around and begin increasing your milk production once again.

1. Allergy and Cold Meds

• Pseudoephedrine can decrease milk production early on.

• Once your milk supply is established, you can safely ward off sneezes again.

2. Postpartum Hemorrhage

• The trauma and stress can prevent your milk from coming in.

• But pumping and frequent breastfeeding can signal your body to make milk.

3. Tyroid Troubles

• A low-functioning thyroid can affect your milk supply.

• If baby isn't getting enough breast milk, have your thyroid checked.

4. Herbs and Spices

• Certain herbs can decrease milk supply: Sage, peppermint, oregano, lemon balm, parsley and thyme.

• But don't worry, a pinch while cooking is just fine.

5. Birth Control

• Estrogen-based birth control could inhibit breast milk production.

• Stick to progestin-only options like the Mirena IUD or the mini-pill while nursing.
