Common burping methods include holding the baby over your shoulder while gently rubbing and patting the back or, holding the baby in a sitting position, supporting the neck and gently patting or rubbing the back.

As you move in to helping your baby sleep through the night, you will need to do something new and very difficult in reaction to some of your baby's cries. That is to hold yourself back and let the baby be upset and learn some soothing on his own.

Some babies seem to be born with an internal clock and drift off to sleep easily and sleep for long stretches. Well other newborns are more erratic and seem to fight sleep at every turn.

Breastfed babies can have trouble with some of the proteins in breastmilk, or they might react to compounds in certain gas-producing foods, like kale and cauliflower. Eat these in moderation if you see a link.

If your baby has painful gas or acid reflux, consider sitting him on your lap so he's in an upright position. Let his head rest on your chest so he's facing out or position him sideways with his head resting in the crook of your arm.

Then check your feeding position. Many people feed their babies almost in a lying position, with the infants nearly flat on their backs. Instead, make sure your baby’s head is higher than his or her tummy.
