Group B Streptococcus Infection During Vaginal Birth

Many women have Group B streptococcus and don't even know it because they have no signs or symptoms. While it isn't that serious for adults, the tiny bacteria can severely affect newborns. Find out in this video why GBS is so harmful to babies during labor and delivery and what can be done to prevent a Group B strep infection in pregnancy.

If a GBS bacteria positive mother is not treated with antibiotics, her baby can be exposed to GBS bacteria during a vaginal birth. Once in contact with the baby, the GBS bacteria can gain entry to the baby's body via mucous membranes of the nose and mouth or through breaks in the skin. The GBS bacteria infection can then spread through the baby's blood to infect other organ systems throughout the body.
