Pregnancy Back Pain: Diagnosis and Treatment

Low back pain during pregnancy is a symptom and not a medical disorder. Your medical history and a physical examination provide the physician with enough information to diagnose this condition. In some cases, when the doctor is concerned about nerve function, imaging tests, such as an MRI, may be recommended.

To prevent back pain during pregnancy, stay active and get some form of exercise daily. Swimming, yoga, and walking are examples that can keep your back healthy. Heat sometimes helps ease back pain during pregnancy. You can try a hot water bottle or a hot shower.

Some people find cold applications also relieve back pain. Proper posture during sitting, working, or sleeping can relieve back pain. Alternating sleeping positions to reduce stress on the low back can help relieve pain during pregnancy.

Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine where thin needles are inserted into the skin in different regions of the body. In some cases, acupuncture can help relieve low back pain during pregnancy.

Medications may help control back pain during pregnancy, but medications may be used only when other methods of back pain treatment are not effective. Never take medications during pregnancy without talking to your doctor.
