10 Tips to Avoid UTIs in Pregnancy

UTIs are common in pregnancy but there's lots you can do to reduce how often you experience them.  In this week's episode GentleBirth Founder Tracy Donegan shares her top tips with you for peaceful peeing in pregnancy.

Pregnancy compromises the immune system putting pregnant mothers at a much higher risk of a UTI, leading to a kidney infection. If that happens, both the mother and baby are put at risk for things like preterm labor or preeclampsia. 

Women are at a higher risk of developing a UTI during pregnancy if they have diabetes, sickle cell disease, prior kidney surgeries, or any problems with the kidney or urinary tract. 

10 Tips to Avoid UTIs in Pregnancy
• Wipe from front to back.
• Pee after sex.
• Empty your bladder often.
• Wear loose cotton underwater.
• Cranberry supplements (with PAC) or D-Mannose.
• Probiotics.
• Fiber.
• Avoid the epidural.
• No douching.
• No hot tubs.
