These masterpieces are made by artist Shantall Alam. She creates designs all over the body but her work with pregnant women is her favorite. In some cultures, henna is used as blessing for expecting mothers. And it creates a special bond between mother and artist.
Shantall Alam (Henna Artist): "Most designs can be done any time you want, but a henna belly is special. It's an experiaence since you get to interact with the mother and the baby. And some artists say it's even magic."
Alam grew up making all kinds of art. "I have an artistic background, since my mother has an art school in my house. So I have a always been surrounded by art, painting, brushes."
In 2009, henna became her favorite art form. "Nothing can beat the perfection of henna. Henna art itself is an experience, watching the artist create magic with each stroke, the exquisite smells of the essential oils, and my favorite part when the henna's starting to get dry, it has like a menthol sensation in your skin."
