Massage during pregnancy has gained a lot in popularity within recent years. Originally, it tended to be limited to groups of women who favoured alternative therapies. But now it is seen as a valid and useful means of reducing general pregnancy discomfort.
Massage therapy is generally safe and incredibly beneficial throughout pregnancy, including the first trimester. However, getting a massage is a little like gentle exercise for your body; it increases your blood and lymph circulation, making your heart work just a bit harder.
The type of massage the expectant mother receives depends on where they are in the term of their pregnancy. You must be in your second or third trimester to receive a prenatal massage session, and the general rule of thumb is the further along the pregnancy, the less rigorous and deep the massage becomes.
