Like many expectant moms, Raquel Maldonado looked forward to the act of giving birth to her baby girl. However, the weeks leading up to the baby’s delivery didn’t quite turn out how she expected.
At 32 weeks pregnant, Maldonado was told by her doctors that her baby was breeched. She and her husband discovered that it was illegal for midwives to deliver breech babies in California. This meant she would require a C-section to ensure her and the child’s safety.
Maldonado was horrified at the thought of having a C-section. She believed the process would take motherhood away from her — that she wasn’t really giving birth to her baby, so she wasn’t really a mom.
Though she was afraid at first, she's now proud of her new scar and happy with how the birth of her new baby went, and she's posted an intimate photo to make other mothers feel at peace with their cesarean scars.
