The cradle hold is used typically for babies who are a little bit older, who can latch themselves on, who have much better head control. Sort of doesn't matter if they're hanging over your shoulder or they're actually cradled in the crook of your arm. They're not going anywhere. There''s really no nipple soreness involved anymore. It's usually not the ideal position for a newborn because they do need so much more body support and head support.
So really for the older babies, the cradle hold would be much better. And they fall into it much more naturally as they don't need that support from the cross cradle or the football hold anymore. The cradle hold is pretty much the most popular hold that you'll see. Most moms, they're usually the ones on the park bench with the cell phone in one hand, the baby in the other latched on, maybe even a dog leash. That's usually the cradle hold that you see. And it's really not intended for very, very little babies who need a lot more support.
